A look into ways you can earn some extra money:
Internal opportunities
When it comes to getting more money we usually hear the typical comments of get a second job or spend less.
There are ways you can earn more that don’t necessarily involve getting a second job or spending less, it’s looking at where you currently work and seeing how you can up skill.
The first thing I would recommend is investing in yourself, find out what you need to learn and speak to your manager about getting into a workplace management plan that will help you level up whilst on the job. You may also work in an industry where while there may not be anywhere further you can go within your current role, you may be able to apply your skills to another part of the business. An example of this is when I was working in payroll, I expressed interest in working in another area of the business, and was eventually given an opportunity to work within the quality assurance team because I had in-depth knowledge of payroll.
External opportunities
Sometimes you “hit the ceiling” and go as far as you can and that’s okay too, so how else you can earn more?
Seek usually has some great advice for the current job markets about how people can up skill. This can include upskilling through studying a course, applying for traineeships or apprenticeships, even applying for similar roles within your own industry. You always have an opportunity to learn something new each time you work in a new business.
Investing or micro investing
You can put aside small amounts into easy investment platforms, some offer great rates of return.
You can read more about how I invest here and what pretty cool platforms there are available now.
Use your NET time better:
Find ways that you can use NET (no extra time) better. This is the time such as commuting to and from work, when you’re on a lunch break, if you’re sitting on the couch relaxing in the evening, etc. It essentially isn’t any additional time you have to allocate out of your day, it’s time that will pass anyway and you can get something out of it. So what are ways you can better use this NET time?
Listen to podcasts or watch videos that teach you something, I learnt so much from listening to finance audio books while commuting to work when we lived in Sydney.
Find ways to earn a little extra
I have listed a few ideas under Cash in a Hurry detailing how you can earn extra through using a little bit of savvy knowledge and time. Things like doing surveys, entering competitions, ironing, support roles within your community etc. With some of these unusual platforms you can find multiple ways to earn, one by doing and two by sharing. So for surveys, if you use a referral link both the person joining and the referee will usually get a credit. Not always, but usually.
I've linked the platforms I use below:
Hire it out
There are so many different types of hiring platforms now, you can literally hire out anything. Now days most people don’t want to hold on to heaps of things that they may eventually need, one day in 6 years time. It’s more about keeping your space for things that are important to you now, and either buying or hiring something as you need it. Just like I bought my wedding dress for $90 and sold it for $50 after the occasion. It’s not something I’ll ever wear again and I don’t want it taking up valuable real estate in the wardrobe.
So what can you hire out? Below are a few ideas of what you can hire out and a few businesses that provide the service. A lot of companies start out hiring their products through Facebook marketplace, so that’s a great resource to use.
Party items:
Giant garden games
Photo Booth
Tables and chairs
Backdrops
Lanterns and drink dispensers
Themed decorations
Your house for location shoots:
Electrical items:
Garden tools
Building tools
Cleaning tools
Clothes like dresses and suits:
Cars
Trucks
Trailers
If you also happen to live in a location close to people’s workplace and they usually park on your street, you can hire out your parking spot during the day.
