When it comes to thrifting, in my family I absolutely dominate. Not only can I find super cheap food, but quite often I find free food too.
To assist with people struggling there is a website called Ask Izzy which can provide information from over 450,000 support resources. This includes financial , housing and food assistance to name just a few and it’s Australia wide.
There are also a significant number of resources available on Facebook, if you type in the search box Free and your area there are likely a number of pages or groups you can join where people give stuff away.
Coles and Woolworths have committed to the price scanning policy which essentially states that if you are charged a higher price than the advertised price, you get the first item free and any additional identical item at the promotional price.
As with anything there are limits and T&C’s so I’ve linked their policies below.
Where possible see if you can get your groceries cheaper through local markets. Quite often you’ll be able to get cheaper veggies through the fruit and veg grocer and if you’re able to buy meat in bulk you can possibly buy value packs from your local butcher, so the meat may cost the same as the big supermarkets, but it’s likely to be better quality.
There are a number of cheaper shopping venues around Perth where you can nab absolute bargains:
Food
Borello beef in Hazelmere, stocks a large range of lamb, beef and chicken. They have some really good priced meats if you don’t mind buying in bulk.
Selective meats in Canning Vale, they sell very cheap veggies and every week they have specials on different meat products. Some weeks it’s an absolute bargain. Open Thu-Sun.
Canning Vale Markets are renowned for being affordable and the quality is great. It does get super busy as it’s only open for a short period of time over the weekends.
Crosilva Poultry Farm in Hazelmere has pretty cheap eggs and super fresh.
Fremantle Egg Company also has great priced eggs.
General
Mr Bargain in Malaga, he generally always has super cheap items and the range is always changing due to the cheap items they are able to source.
Collecting points is a great way to get a cheeky $10 of your shop every now and then. I don’t go out of my way to buy things I wasn’t going to buy, but I boost every offer and buy products in bulk when products are on half price special. companies that have these points systems are:
Woolworths and Big W use Everyday Rewards.
Coles and Kmart use Flybuys.
Some independent stores like IGA, it’s always worth asking your local of they have a loyalty program.
You can also sign up to the big two’s saver program which gives you extra points, 10% off one shop per month, a freebie every now and then and also has a referral program that can help boost your balance. They both have free trials so if it’s not for you cancel within the free trial period.
Hopefully there are some handy tips you’ve picked up, if you have any you’d like to share contact us through our contact form as we’d love to hear from you!
